Habilitation Teaching Duty
Important Information regarding teaching duty after successful habilitation
LHG: § 39 (3)
Having acquired their habilitation, a person is awarded the authority to teach a particular scienfitic subject or subject area. With their habilitation, the person further gains the right to carry the title “Privatdozent:in” (private lecturer), provided they carry out teaching in their subject area of at least 2 SWS (weekly teaching hours) per semester.
Constitution of Heidelberg University: § 26 (5)
The teaching obligation in accordance with sec. 39 (3) LHG, to which the authorisation to use the title of associate professor is linked, shall generally be performed at Heidelberg University. Exceptions from this shall be determined by the dean of the faculty in question in coordination with the Rector or another member of the Rectorate designated by the Rector.
Please also refer to § 17 Ruhen, Widerruf, Erlöschen der Lehrbefugnis und der Habilitation of the faculty's habilitation regulations, which can be accessed in German language via the link.
Please note that you are obligated to inform the dean's office about professorship substitutions, professorship appointments, relocation of habilitation etc. Otherwise the dean's office will assume that you are regularly fulfilling your teaching duty.
At the end of each semester the institute at which you fulfill your teaching duty will ask you to fill out and submit a form documenting your teaching (Lehrerfassungsbogen).
Applications for exemption from teaching duty for a semester have to be submitted to the dean's office with sufficient time in hand before the semester in question. This can also be done electronically.
