Binational doctoral procedures

Cotutelle de thèsis

Cotutelle de thèse procedures are binational doctoral procedures carried out in cooperation with foreign partner universities. These procedures are binational primarily with regard to the supervision of the dissertation, work stays at the partner university, the participation of external supervisors in the assessment and examination procedure, and the issuance of a joint doctoral degree certificate from both universities.
To avoid any misunderstanding: a binational doctoral procedure does not mean that two doctoral degrees are awarded on the basis of one doctoral thesis. Rather, a single title is awarded in accordance with the principles of German examination law.

For each cotutelle procedure, a contract must be concluded between the participating universities, in which the details are regulated. Such a concluded contract must already be available for the approval of the doctoral application. Therefore, please contact the Dean's Office (Doctoral Office) at an early stage. Experience has shown that the drafting of a contract can take several months. Once you have been accepted as a doctoral candidate, it is no longer possible to draft or conclude a contract at our faculty.
